Health & Wellness

Dear Parents,

As the new school year approaches, I would like to take the opportunity to remind us all about the steps that we can take to keep our campus community healthy and the resources that are available for students at Manhattanville.   Health Services are available at the student Health Center for all full time undergraduate students of Manhattanville College.  Please rest assured that we are taking every possible precaution to keep members of the Manhattanville community informed about the flu and remain in regular contact with the NY State Department of Health regarding recommended steps to be taken to ensure the health of our community.

H1N1

The symptoms of novel H1N1 flu virus in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.  A significant number of people who have been infected with novel H1N1 flu virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting.  Most people diagnosed with H1N1 to date have experienced mild illness.  More serious illness has also occurred, especially among those with chronic health conditions that place them at risk for complications of seasonal influenza (NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene 6/09).   People at higher risk of serious complications from seasonal flu include people age 65 years and older, children younger than 5 years old, pregnant women, people of any age with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease, and people who are immunosuppressed. Stay healthy,

  • Wash your hands frequently with warm soap and water.
  • Use alcohol based hand sanitizers.  Hand sanitizers have been placed around campus for your use.
  • Cough into your elbow or into a tissue.   Sneeze into a tissue.  Dispose of the tissue after use
  • Exercise, eat well and get a good night sleep.
  • Drink plenty of water to remain hydrated.
  • Flu shots will be available in the Health Center for students in the fall.

If you feel ill,

  • Students are encouraged to come to the Health Center located in Spellman Hall (914) 323-5245 as soon as they notice the first signs of illness.  Do not wait until your symptoms become worse before coming in!
  • You should be fever free for 24 hours prior to returning to class, attending events (www. cdc.gov).
  • Avoid contact with others to reduce the spread of illness. Students should communicate with roommates, professors and advisors and let them know if they are sick and unable to attend class.
  • Medical providers are available in the Health Center Monday – Friday and late Tuesdays and Thursday evenings.

Sincerely,

Pamela P. Duncan, Ph.D.

Director of Health and Counseling
