Connect to the Network

Residence Hall Computing - Internet Access Fall - 2007

High Speed Internet and campus Intranet access is available in every dorm room for each student. Manhattanville has a high-speed fiber optics connection to the Internet providing access to the campus at100 megabits per second! Incredibly fast…yes you’re right! The cost for Internet access (along with cable TV services)  is included in the student’s room & board.

Equipment you will need to connect:

  • A PC with at least a Pentium or compatible processor, running Windows (Vista, XP or 2000).
Apple (G4, G5, iMac etc.) computers can also be connected. However you should understand that the predominant computer platform at Manhattanville is Windows and services generally reflect this reality.
  • An Ethernet network card (if not already built in to your computer).
Apple computers have a built in Ethernet network card as a matter of general design.
We can install the card for you if need assistance (Please call the Help Desk at ext. 7230 to make arrangements to get your computer properly configured).
If you bring an unsupported network card we cannot guarantee that it will function correctly on the campus network.
  • At least a 25-foot category 5e (CAT – 5e) network patch cable.
The Campus Bookstore carries a limited supply of the referenced networking equipment. It would be better however, if you came in with the requisite equipment.

Software Required:

Manhattanville College requires:

  • An updated antivirus Program installed on your computer.
Manhattanville College will distribute, at no extra charge, Network Associates/Mcafee antivirus for download to the students. We have a network management device that enforces these policies, which are to a mutual benefit to all students.
  • Compliance with all of Microsoft Windows critical updates. (Visit the Microsoft Windows Update page.)
  • Any antivirus software other than McAfee Enterprise must be removed. The Information Technology department takes viruses and their potential proliferation very seriously and we require that students be of the same mindset.

To get connected (New & Returning Students):

When you arrive on campus you will have to go through a series of automated steps to gain access to the campus network and the Internet. The Dormitory Internet and Cable TV Installation Guide will be available to guide you through the steps to get connected.

If you are not able to connect to the Internet on your own:

Try the steps listed on the Configure Network Software for Windows or Macintosh page.

The Help Desk is here to assist you if needed. Call [ext. 7230] to schedule Help Desk Assistance.

We believe your computing and Internet access experience at Manhattanville will be a pleasant one.
