PURCHASE, N.Y (Sept. 4, 2007) – An academic linkage agreement was signed today between Manhattanville College and Keio University in Japan, including the affiliated Keio Academy of New York. The schools hope to collaborate on various educational initiatives, including possible student exchanges, professor visits and research activities.
Manhattanville College has a unique connection with Keio. The Keio Academy of New York, an elite high school, shares a plot of land with Manhattanville, literally a soccer field away. For years the Japanese students who attend Keio have made use of Manhattanville’s smaller perks, like their free shuttle that goes into New York City on the weekend.
“What makes this agreement unique is that it involves three schools. It includes Keio Academy,” says Manhattanville President Richard Berman. “Sometimes we travel all around the world and don’t take advantage of our neighbors.”
Professor Yuichiro Anzai, President of Keio University, arrived in Purchase for the signing after a thirteen-hour flight. He says the academic linkage agreement signifies, “Future cooperation between two countries and the whole world. ”The agreement was signed in the castle on the campus of Manhattanville College. Both parties expressed hope that the academic agreement results in the two institutions of higher learning being “enriched by each other,” in the words of President Berman.
