MA in Creative Writing: Finding One’s Voice
2008
Writers and aspiring writers of any age and experience can develop or deepen their skills at Manhattanville College through the Master of Arts in Creative Writing program. Instructors include award-winning authors, poets, and literary editors who impart their knowledge and experience to help students find their voice and unlock the writer within.
According to Jaye Murray, who graduated from Manhattanville with an MA in Creative Writing in 2004, “For me, Manhattanville’s writing program provided two critical components to my writing education. One was the exposure to top-rate published authors in the classroom, workshops, and at readings. The second was the supportive contact with serious students who were earnest in their craft.”
The program sponsors Summer Writers’ Week, an opportunity for students to learn with other writers under the guidance of renowned guest faculty. Summer Writers’ Week 2008, which marks its 25th anniversary, will feature workshops with Roxanna Robinson (fiction), Major Jackson (poetry), and Rachel Cohen (creative nonfiction); an editors and agents panel; and a keynote address by Nan Talese ’55. The spring 2008 Meet the Writers series of literary readings welcomed Cokie Roberts and Mary Gordon. Workshops and seminars led by published authors, and a panel of small press editors, are also planned.
MA students can serve on the editorial and production staff of Inkwell, the school’s literary journal, as well as submit pieces for inclusion. Published twice yearly, Inkwell “deserves the kind of ubiquity enjoyed by The New Yorker and The Atlantic Monthly, deserves to be laid proudly on coffee tables everywhere,” according to NewPages.com, which covers the independent publishing industry. A copy of Inkwell can be seen on the desk of Dustin Hoffman’s character in the movie Stranger Than Fiction.
