Kevin Powell at Manhattanville

02.05.2008

In honor of Black History Month, renowned journalist, civil rights activist and hip hop expert Kevin Powell spoke at Manhattanville on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Powell, the popular author of a number of books including the collection of essays titled "Someday We Will All Be Free," has spoken about topics including multiculturalism and black rights at universities such as Yale and Princeton.

Although the evening's assembly kicked off Black History Month, Powell said, "It's really American history we're talking about… None of us would be sitting here civilly if it weren't for the Civil Rights Movement."  The movement, Powell explained, gave him the opportunity to rise from "Welfare, food stamps and government cheese—a life I wouldn't wish on anyone" to a successful, productive life.
