Julia Dixon & Christopher Manning
Art Exhibition
01.16.- 02.15.08
Opening Reception is Wednesday, Jan. 16, 5pm-7pm. Exhibit runs from Jan. 16 – Feb. 15, 2008.
The New Student Center Gallery at Manhattanville College is pleased to present paintings by Julia Dixon and assemblages by Christopher Manning. The exhibition will consist of medium scale paintings, along with various size assemblages and constructions.
Christopher Manning’s assemblages are strong narratives that deal with an exploration of what he terms the void. “Each artwork represents a battle of process and coexistence between my own constructive and destructive forces. Through the use of found object sculpture and multi-media collage composed of mostly worn and discarded items, I explore the abstract nature of the psychological underpinnings of these dualities, in search of tranquility and resolution.”
Julia Dixon’s portraits are personal examinations of the self. She examines the use of photography as a tool to capture the frozen moment she is searching for. “What draws me to paint self portraits is the need to express my identity, personality and self image; to reflect on the question, “How can I know who I am if I can’t see who I am?” Through paint and photography, I struggle with the complexities of gender, ambiguity, femininity and sexuality.”
Julia Dixon is an alumna of Purchase College, SUNY and Christopher Manning is an alumnus of Manhattanville College. Both artists live and work in Westchester County, New York.
