Darlene D’Alliessi Gandolfi is an Assistant Professor and the Chairperson of the Chemistry Department at Manhattanville College. She also serves as the Chairperson of the Pre-Health Professions Advisory Committee (PHPAC). After receiving her BA, summa cum laude, from Manhattanville, Dr. Gandolfi went on to earn a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Yale University. Prior to returning to Manhattanville as a full-time faculty member, she worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University. She has published articles in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and Organometallics. Her research interests include the synthesis of small molecules as chemotherapeutics for HIV and cancer.
Her research was presented at the Microbicides 2006 Conference in Cape Town, South Africa in April 2006. The research, entitled “Drug Development as Rediscovery: The Antiretroviral Activity of the Vaginal Fungicide Ciclopirox,” is part of a collaborative effort with researchers at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, NJ and at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD to devise treatments for HIV. The goal of the Microbicides Conference is to raise public awareness of microbicides as a promising HIV prevention technology, as well as highlighting the enormity of the HIV/AIDS epidemic especially in developing countries and in Sub-Saharan Africa.
