II. What should you know before applying to a Cooperative Study Abroad Program?

Manhattanville encourages students to explore outside of both their traditional and cultural experiences by studying overseas. Regrettably, the school has limited spaces each year in its own cooperative programs and must employ highly competitive standards during the selection process.  Interested Sophomore students should visit the Study Abroad Office soon and consult with the Director of the program in order to apply for travel the Junior year of study. 

Two Different Types of Overseas Programs

1.    Cooperative Programs:

(Sites include but are not limited to: Galway, Rome, Florence, London, Oxford, Seville, Madrid, Paris, Berlin, Brussels, Prague, Moscow, Santiago, Jerusalem, Buenos Aires and Johannesburg)

a. Students must have:

- a convincing rationale as evidenced by a broad spectrum of considerations

· course concentration (Major)

· cultural interests

· extra curricular activities

- successfully completed the writing requirement (C or better in ENC 2085)

- their portfolios approved by the Board on Academic Standards

- completed at least TWO years of foreign language study as applicable to individual overseas program

- a minimum GPA of 3.2 or better

- Classified as a Junior or first semester Senior at the time of overseas study. Seniors in their final semester are NOT eligible.

b. Students pay Manhattanville College tuition

c. Student’s Manhattanville institutional and federal aid can be applied to cost of program

d. Course titles from cooperative programs appear on Manhattanville transcripts

e. Grades are calculated into the students’ GPAs

f. Earned overseas credit are fully transferable (upon Dean’s approval)

2. Non-Cooperative Programs:

a. Students research the program they are interested in and follow up on their own ­ but have full access to Study Abroad facilities

b. Students pay tuition and all other program costs directly to the host institution to which they are applying

c. Students are not able to use their Manhattanville institutional aid (although they may be eligible for state and federal aid)

d. Credits will be issued as transfer credits only in block format and must be approved by the Dean and appropriate departments prior to the commencement of overseas courses

e. Students must request an official “leave of absence” form which has to be signed by the Dean of Studies
