Visual Arts Education
Manhattanville offers two graduate programs in Art Education leading to initial/professional New York State certification in Visual Arts, all grades: a Master of Arts in Teaching program and an Advanced Certification program. Both programs prepare candidates to teach Art in all grades from pre-school through 12th grade.
Master of Arts in Teaching
The MAT program in Visual Arts Education is designed for candidates with a bachelors degree (or 30 credits in Art including 6 in Art History) and no prior education coursework. It includes 21 credits in Education coursework, 100 hours of field experience aligned with education course assignments, 12 credits in Studio Art coursework, and a 6-credit, fourteen week student/ supervised teaching experience. Entrance requirements for the masters degree program include a portfolio review by members of the Art Department.
In both programs, Education courses include Foundations of Education or Introduction to the Multicultural Classroom, Introduction to the Exceptional Candidate, Art Education Workshop, Aesthetic Literacy, Literacy in the Content Areas, and Beyond Teaching: Organization and Management Strategies for the Beginning Art Teacher.

Advanced Certification in Visual Arts Education
The Advanced Certification program in Visual Arts Education is designed for candidates who already have a masters degree in Art or a functionally related area and 30 credits in Art including 6 in Art History at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels. This program includes 21 credits in education coursework, 100 hours of field experience aligned with that coursework, and a 6-credit, fourteen week student/ supervised teaching experience.
Candidates in both programs are expected to complete all New York State liberal arts prerequisites, a course in Child Development, required state tests and required state seminars in Child Abuse and violence Prevention seminars. Candidates in the Master of Arts in Teaching program must complete either a Comprehensive Examination or Final Project.
