Literacy Education

Manhattanville’s Literacy programs help teachers develop expertise in the teaching of reading and writing. Given the demand for accountability on the part of elementary and secondary teachers, a strong background in literacy is essential for all teachers. The Writing Component of the MPS Literacy Programs

The Writing strand, 11 credits in the MPS in Literacy program, provides students with unique opportunities to learn how to teach writing and how to hone one’s own skills as a writer. The courses, Writing and Thinking and Writing: A Process Approach, provide background knowledge in teaching the writing process within a Balanced Literacy Program.

The culminating experience within the Writing strand is participation in a Writing Workshop for Teachers, a week long workshop that takes place during the summer and offers Manhattanville students an opportunity to explore the writing process themselves and develop appropriate curricula for teaching writing, and participation in an additional week long internship working at Manhattanville’s summer writing camp for children (Young People’s Writing Camp). In this internship, Manhattanville graduate students draw upon their experiences in the Writing Workshop to provide best practice writing instruction to children attending the camp. Interns work with children who are passionate about writing to support their growth as writers. Children partake in the writing process and work to bring pieces of writing to publication.
