CROSSING THE BORDER

Three major Mexican directors now working in Hollywood have produced some of the most exciting and compelling films seen in recent years. Each session will cover one key work from these filmmakers.

On October 11, we will view clips from Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)—possibly the most original movie to come out of last year’s Academy Award nominees. Combining the realism of the Spanish Civil War with a child’s fairy tale universe, del Toro portrays a young girl’s struggle to make difficult moral decisions in both worlds.

On October 25, we’ll see how in Children of Men (2006), Alfonso Cuaron creates a sterile yet visually stunning future in which a small group of rebels try to save the last pregnant woman in a violent world. The cast includes Clive Owen and Julianne Moore. Finally,

on November 8, we’ll view clips from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s film 21 Grams (2003), starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. The director uses his characteristically multinarrative story lines to unravel the questions surrounding the accidental death of a young professor’s family and the complicated lives of those involved. In addition to clips from these films, we will also see clips from other works by these filmmakers
