Meet the Staff
The ARC has four full-time professional instructors who work in the English and Mathematics departments and who also tutor at the ARC. Each instructor administers aspects of the ARC curriculum. A brief profile of the credentials of each ARC instructor follows.
Elizabeth Lewis, Director ARC
Ms. Lewis is an Adjunct Lecturer in the English Department at Manhattanville, teaching writing and literature courses. She received her B.A. from Radcliffe College in English literature and her M.A. in English language and literature from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. She worked in publishing as as a reader and an editor before joining the ARC in 1983. While at Manhattanville she has received 18 graduate credits in English literature and English as a Second Language, and she has a knowledge of Spanish. Library Room G12, Ext. 5474 (914-323-5474).
Beth Fonfrias, Writing Instructor and Coordinator, SI Program
Ms. Fonfrias holds a B.A. in History and an M.A. in Language Arts and Literature from San Francisco State University. She has worked extensively in the field of publishing, and taught writing and world literature at Pace University before joining the Manhattanville faculty in 1989. At Manhattanville she is an Adjunct Instructor of English, teaching the freshman Preceptorial and various writing courses. Library, Room 213, Ext. 5241 (914-323-5241).
Helene Karasick, Writing Tutor
Mrs. Karasick specializes in English as a second language. She has worked at the A.R.C. in this capacity since 1997. Mrs. Karasick received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Speech Pathology from Boston University, and she earned 36 graduate credits in E.S.L. at Manhattanville College. Prior to her work as a tutor in writing, Mrs. Karasick taught elementary school in Massachusets, supervised the A.R.C. computer lab, and worked as a HEOP counselor at Manhattanville. Michelle Longhitano, Mathematics Instructor
Ms. Longhitano, in addition to tutoring in math at the ARC is Coordinator of Freshman-Level Mathematics at Manhattanville, supervising placement and follow-up for all students taking Introduction to College Mathematics and Calculus. She received her B.A. and M.A.T. degrees from Manhattanville College. She teaches Introduction to College Mathematics and Calculus I, as well as tutoring and running the peer tutoring program in Mathematics at the ARC. Library Room G12, Ext. 2719 (914-798-2719).
Karen Steinmetz, Writing Instructor
Ms. Steinmetz teaches in the Academic Writing Program in addition to tutoring in writing for the ARC. She holds a B.A. from New York University and an M.A. in Creative Writing from Manhattanville College. Her young-adult novel, The Mourning Wars, will be published by Roaring Brook Press in March 2009, and her poetry appears regularly in literary journals. Brownson room 3E, Ext. 3186 (914-323-3186).
